In "Being Mary Jane," Union plays the title character: Mary Jane Paul, a successful TV news anchor who is trying to balance her career and personal life. In an Associated Press interview that was published on July 1, 2013, Union said that former CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien inspired how she played the role of Mary Jane Paul. Since leaving CNN, O'Brien and her production company, Starfish Media Group, have inked a deal with the news channel Al Jazeera America (which launches in August 2013), to produce news segments and documentary specials.
